Here today, Saigon tomorrow

A family from California moves to Ho Chi Minh City. Hilarity ensues.

Our Commute

In case you don’t remember me mentioning it fifteen months ago, we commute to school every morning via two bicycles: The Little Lady rides on the back rack of Sarah’s bike, while I steer a monster of a tandem which can actually seat four (small) people.  We’ve commemorated the kiddos’ last school day here in Southeast Asia with a video of our two-thirds of a mile/seven-minute commute (don’t worry, I’ve sped up most of it so it’s just over two minutes).  Enjoy!

Highlights:

0:24 – The massive temple complex across the highway and our apartment building towering over us.

0:43 – Merging, Vietnamese sytle.

0:47 – It’s probably a good thing that the light was green or you would have noticed that in this country stop lights are only (sometimes) obeyed by cars, including yours truly at this intersection.  You also get a quick view of the elevated railway under construction.  We’re hoping it’ll be functional when we come back to visit old haunts in 2025.

0:56 – Rice-based breakfast from the back of a motorbike.

1:09 – An entire shoe store on the back of a motorbike?  Why not?

1:16 – A Vietnamese convenience store/cart.

1:27 – Local kids on their way to school.  Their school uniforms are white shirts with red scarves.

1:47 – I head over towards the larger parking lot, while Sarah heads towards school for a better shot.

1:52 – Our humble school/work

(The music is Return of the Hardcore Jumble Carbootechnodisco Roadshow by Bentley Rhythm Ace.)

While we’ve been doing that for quite awhile without telling y’all, we won’t in fact do that again since the tandem is now in the hands of the shipping company and we no longer have to go to work here. (Whoopee!)
